988的前身是麗的呼聲無線廣播私人有限公司旗下的電台，原名爲RED 98.8（麗的98.8），開播於1996年5月8日，以華語、粵語、英語三語廣播、1997年12月陞級爲全華語電台。2003年，麗的呼聲無線廣播私人有限公司被星報媒體集團收購。成爲第一家以馬來西亞報業爲主的旗下華語電台。
